Of course, this statement is false. It does not fail "dismally when
anyone tries to use it". That would imply that it works for no one.
It quite clearly works for some people (including myself; Wasabi has a
proprietary application that uses pthreads, and it runs quite well). I
know other people who frequently run some other applications (like
xmms) with no problem, even when others send mail complaining about
xmms not working properly.
Precisely because of the nature of some of the problems (reproducible
on system A but not system B, etc.), the entire developer and user
community needs to be involved in helping to fix the bugs.
