FWIF: FreeBSD now uses a thing called GEOM to do something very much similar
to the wedges proposal, but completely in-kernel. (Interestingly, and I won't
comment on that design decision, their "cgd" equivalent is at that level too.)

This adds a lot of complexity vs. the quite simple (from a kernel POV) wedges
sheme, but gains ~nothing.
