I was the one who looked into this before.  I recommend the
video4linux2 interface.  It looks better, but the video4linux API
maintained the momentum to become the defacto linux interface.
They're unrelated projects.

Somewhere around the place is the MI video interface I developed some
years ago.  It only supported the Creative cards.  The v4l2 interface
is similar, but more complete.
