BTW, this is not uncommon practice in other projects, either. GDB,
for example, requires all new targets to conform to the new "multi-arch"
target definition, and even new configurations (e.g. OS support) of
existing targets is allowed only if the target is first converted to
the "multi-arch" way of doing things.
