In XFree86 version 4 and newer, depth is set with -depth. From
XFree86(1):

-bpp n  No  longer supported.  Use -depth to set the color depth, and
        use -fbbpp if you really need to force a  non-default  frame-
        buffer (hardware) pixel format.
