Strikes me that section 9 of the manual is not precisely accessible
to the "newbie".

I had the impression that the original poster was looking for
something like, oh, maybe http://www.moses.uklinux.net/patches/lki.html
or even http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html.

I think the links I provided are the closest we come to that.
