i have read, but will not pretend to understand, all of what you just
wrote, but i have two questions.

i have a machine (my laptop) where sometimes it boots and finds a
floppy drive (always an fdc0, but only sometimes an fd0), so i suppose
this would be okay, yes?

i have another machine with a few wd devices, but i was thinking of
adding some sd devices.  i would have a rebuild /dev after this, yes?

how will this affect ports where /dev/console is not 0,0?
