xstr(1) doesn't play very nicely with embedded assembler - the compiler
didn't like

   __asm volatile ((&xstr[0]) : (&xstr[11])(ipending) : (&xstr[14]) (1 << mask));

very much :-(  Also, it doesn't support parallel builds (it always
uses "x.c").  The idea might be worth checking out further though...
