i've done the rename; mrg suggested that too.
i added this because i have to have some specific mods to the source
tree for one of my systems (to prevent it panicing in apm I need to
fake an error return), and it seemed a sensible thing to do. i don't
expect that it will be used by the default kernels much, if at all.
