I looked at the examples ages ago, but not for this problem because I consider this a kernel issue and so userland apm scripts didn't even occur to me. 

The script worked well for me (well, it uncovered a bug in my code, so it must be good). I will also look at making sure the kernel is at least aware of when PCMCIA cards are powered down after a resume.
