Well, under ULTRIX I had lat supporting >512 terminals.  Eventually we
bit the bullet and went to long tty names.  Before then, all ttys where
tty[A-Z0-9a-z][A-Z0-9a-z].  The order you made the device (e.g. MAKEDEV)
controlled how the ttys were numbered.  (e.g. no ttyE*, ttyC*, etc.)
