I know that FreeBSD's userconfig feature has saved many many many
problems with problem devices, especially ed0 compatible cards not at
the default address, the ability to disable devices on the fly, etc.
It is a total hack, and isn't very orthogonal (eg isa devices are
treated more specially than they should be), but it does solve the
problem well from a user's point of view.
