Hmmmm I think the reason was that we were not just using 167's but
also 147's which were not as rich in interfaces ;-)  We could not use
the VME bus because all the processors were not all on the same bus.
We are talking a couple of 6ft 19" racks full of cards, the processor
boards were used as controllers for various parts of a digital signal
processing chain.  Oh, and just for fun the whole thing (including the
executive) was done in a mixture of plenty of Modula-2 and some
assembly language.
