Not really; it's not a stripped binary, is it?  I get roughly the
same size on the SPARC binary, odd and all.

And are you looking at file size or text/data/bss combined size
as a limit?  (I figure it's file size since that's what you're
shoehorning into the boot sector.)

And a second or third stage boot is not an evil thing -- SunOS
had to do that at SunOS 4, if I recall correctly (from SunOS 3.5)
