Thanks to all those who helped. There were many, so I didn't reply 
personally to all of you. 

As per several requests I'll be attempting a basic NetBSD device 
driver HowTo and an example driver code framework or two (e.g. for 
a pseudo device and a PCI device). As a newbie I'm going to need 
some help, but I think it is a worthwhile endeavour?
