What does this laptop have so special ? IDE disks should be detected
just fine. 
Could you try the last i386 snapshot
(ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/arch/i386/snapshots) ? The IDE driver
has got several serious changes since the 1.3 branch was cut.
