Charles and Matt,

I wish to express my extreme gratitude to the both of you for providing
the information necessary to patch my otherwise ailing kernel, as well
as the background information as to why changing it had been a Bad
Thing [TM].

With the supplied patch, perhaps I will be able to actually _build_
a current kernel and have it work :-).  I'll let you know.
