I just re-synced my sources and now the drive 'just works' ;-) Note the
differences:

 wd0 at wdc0 drive 0: <QUANTUM FIREBALL1080A>
 wd0: using 8-sector 16-bit pio transfers, lba mode
            ^                              ^^^
 wd0: 1039MB, 2128896 sec, 512 bytes/sec
