Indeed.  FWIW, NeXTStep (and the Openstep environment on Solaris) has a
command `open'.  `open foo' guesses the type of foo and opens it with
the appropriate application (user definable, of course), or runs it if
its a NeXTish application directory.  I _much_ prefer this type of
solution, ie putting the problem in the hands of a prog I call when I
want the new semantics to muddying the existing interface...  What
happens if I have a gif named `ls' in my path?
