I'm not sure how it relates to the paper that cgd mentions, but there was a
paper presented at the 1990 UKUUG conference by Chris Torek called "A New
Framework for Device Support in Berkeley Unix".  Perhaps it might represent an
earlier version of that work?  I've got a printed copy in the proceedings -- I
don't know if it exists online anywhere.  It was written while Chris was
still at UMD CS dept, so perhaps if they have an archive of tech reports?
