Yah, it's pretty straight-forward, and works.  Charles took a look
at this at one time, and had the idea to just create a reference to
the console directly, and modified init(8) to deal with this, but
punted because it would have had the potentially nasty side-effect of
always keeping the console device open... (although, isn't this always
the case already?  I'll admit that I'm not totally sure...)
