Do you have kernel threads as Solaris does?

Yes we do have kernel threads.

Do you have a thread safe SMP kernel as Solaris does?

(I think you meant a fine-grained kernel) No we do not.

If not, would you be willing to lose this 6% performance advantage
on single processor machines in order to acheive these goals?

Nope, and I can assure you once Linux has the missing link just
mentioned, we will not take this hit. In fact I can doubly assure you
that we'll be much faster by then on both UP and SMP.
