Best book for all this stuff is

"The Indispensable PC Hardware Book" by Hans-Peter Messmer. I use
constantly whenever I am hacking on PC hardware. (The Second Edition
is even better than the first!)

Anyone hacking port-i386 or stuff derived from it will probably find
the book truly "Indispensable".
