After looking at the makefs(8) manpage, it seems that's a missing feature.
What we need is

 	makefs ... image-file directory1 directory2

so we can make directory1 to contain our kernel (w/ ramdisk), and 
directory2=$RELEASEDIR.

Who can hack this into makefs? David? Frank?
