Sure, but replacing mkisof with makefs is orthogonal to the booting issue 
for most archs - mkisofs does not make bootable images for sparc{,64} or
sgimips - additional tools do that, postprocessing the generated "pure" iso
image.

Macppc might be different, but AFAICT it's the only arch besides i386 that
mkisofs knows about.
