Subject: why does xsrc/Makefile assume mk.conf?

Using a fresh (Jan 20th) checkout of xsrc I tried my luck at building it on
some 1.4.2_ALPHA systems. The iMac finished in about 2 hours, the other three
(alpha/arm32/i386) are still happily chugging away.

The clean target fails, but 'make build' forges ahead, which was ok this time.

Strangely though, I had to comment out the include of /etc/mk.conf -- why is
this simply assumed to exist? Is there something I can only do there that I
should be doing, or did somebody just forget that not everyone uses it.
