Indeed, I think it can be argued that crunch is really just a  
compression format that facilitates distribution on small media, and  
including gkermit does not impact the functionality of the other  
programs that are crunched in any way, nor is gkermit extended by the  
other crunched programs, and so the crunched binary can therefore not  
be considered a derivative work.
