Or at least src/doc, to follow conventions...?  :)

I can go with that, but you suggested moving the preformatted versions there
as well.  Because of its nature as a documentation starting point for using
the source tree, I'd like to see the two specific preformatted versions
remain in src/ (or more generally, "wherever UPDATING currently exists");
future supplemental documentation can go in src/doc.

Would you still think it OK to move only BUILDING.mdoc to src/doc at this
time?
