it occurs to me that the problem was a little bigger than this.  all i
was getting in my daily output was

Checking filesystems:
/dev/rwd0a: file system is mounted read-write on /; not checking

which implies to me that it wasn't even attempting to any of the other
filesystems (which might have been mounted read-only).  apologies for
not thinking this through earlier.
