   Merge the MACHINE_ARCH logic from gnu/dist/config.guess, but do this in
   a backwards-compatible way (prefer uname -p, but fall back to
   /sbin/sysctl -n hw.machine_arch).


"fall back to"  ?  /sbin/sysctl is fairly new, it used to be /usr/sbin/sysctl..
