I'm curious..

|it should be done in /etc/rc.local, by the sysadmin, when X is
|installed.

Why can't ldconfig simply be run once when X is installed rather than
each time at boot?  Why would the hints file change between boots
unless you installed libraries and failed to run it?  Rich
