but how about for user-land programs that, say, should be looking
this stuff up in libc to print out the emulation type (e.g.
another option/spec to ps?).

the COMPAT_FOO doesn't work there, nor does the machine type stuff,
esp. once things get to the point that you can move binaries between
m68k platforms, for example.
