That it was.  In fact, that bottle inspired a quick poem - the 3rd in the
masterpiece "The Wasted Land":

"Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight drunk,
Forgot the bucket of ice, and the chaser beer
And the glass of water.
         A current of booze
Picked his bones in whispers. As he drank in cheer
He passed the stages of his age and youth
