It turned out to be the Areca controller. When I yanked it out, the
machine booted normally - with Xen.

Many thanks to Tobias Nygren who spotted this!

(And yes, it's a bit surprising, at least to me, that GENERIC makes it
through, but XEN3_DOM0 doesn't.)
