I've been installing 6.0_BETA (i386 and amd64) on XenServer 6.0.2 by
doing a HVM install and then converting to PV. amd64 was fine (as
was netbsd-6 i386), but after installing, i386 will not boot. The
bootloader loads relevant modules and the kernel, but as soon as the
kernel is entered the VM powers off. No errors are seen.

I tried with a Xen 4.1.2 HVM, I could boot and install from cd,
and then boot from disk. I used NetBSD-6.0_BETA-i386.iso from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/iso/6.0_BETA/

I used the same ISO and repeated the procedure twice. I used a 10GB virtual disk and accepted 508MB for swap in the installer. The only change I made from the defaults was to switch the root filesystem to FFSv1 (because pygrub doesn't like FFSv2).

Odd.
