So this took about 27 hours, which is actually quite a bit faster than I 
thought. In the past, I think it took about a day for my 4000/90a to 
compile cmake, so I wonder what's faster now. No problems :)

Was your VAX system built from the latest sources that include the 
preemption and locking fixes?

If so, then I wonder what's different about your simh setup. Do you use 
(open)simh's idling, for instance?
