I'm simply for trying to find a start, breaking out some obvious
parts. I'd try to do that. There'll be a largeish piece of patch at
the end that wasn't easily cuttable into pieces, but I'd hope to get
it smaller.

3000 lines? Well... The whole VAX backend isn't that size! :)  Or did
you, Matt, even hack it to the point where it would support __thread
stuff?
