I think that general problem has been reported fixed. In any case I have
been running an i386 machine cross-built from amd64 for quite some time
(and I just built a new yesterday's -current to install soon). The
GENERIC kernel passed a sanity check of running with the older userland.

No luck though on finding the vax-gcc problem (not that I really
expected much from that but hey, I could have been lucky).
