Subject: can't boot installer on 4000/100A

I've got a VAX 4000/100A (same thing as a 100, but with 2 DSSI busses).
It has 128 Mb memory and of course Ethernet.
It was recently taken out of service running VMS, so I expect the
hardware is OK, and it passes all self-tests.

When I cable up a couple of 4Gb scsi disks and a CD-ROM, and try to boot
the NetBSD 2.0 CD, it halts right after (apparently) starting the kernel.
The same CD and drive boots just fine on a VAX 4000/60, and runs the
installer.

Any experience or ideas?  Anything else I can check to help gather data?

the bootloader successfully loading the kernel and then trying to
start it.
