I tried booting the NetBSD 1.6 (current) kernal last week on my
VAX 4000-500 last week from tape and got the exact error message Tim is
getting.

I don't have a KZQSA yet. I'm running with 3 RF72 drives and a TF86
tape drive. The one thing I do have in common with Tim's machine is
the configuration of the 2 64MB memory cards.

I've been (still am) running VMS on this system almost 24/7 for the
past 3 years and _love_ this machine.

Just FYI as I'm interested in NetBSD on this family of machines too.
