it might not be as expensive as you think...

I recently had need to ship a studio tape deck across the country
(united states) for servicing, and doing a little shopping around, I was
able to send a 3'x 3'x 3' 167lb crate insured from Portland, OR, to
Boston, MA for a little over $100 through BAX Global shipping with their
BAXSaver fare.

Just for comparison's sake, since 167lbs is over UPS' 150lb limit, it
falls under their "hundredweight" service, and would have cost $500.
Fedex Freight wanted $400. Viking shipping wanted $300 and wouldn't
insure for more than $5/lb.

BAX also ships internationally. http://www.baxglobal.com/

(this is an informational posting. no endorsement of BAX is expressed
or implied. I just figured it might be useful to help move some VAXen
around and keep them from ending up at a scrapper's.)
