This sort of thing was done in the past as well, by several
manufacturers. Not using modern *processors* on the boards, but just
redesigned logic. One that comes to mind is the PEP 1170 card that
you could by for a pdp11/70. If memory serves, it was a high-speed
static RAM card that replaced the memory and its interface logic on
the 11/70.
Doing that stuff at the board level is certainly practical as well,
but would be a time-consuming project to say the least.
