[AFAIK] kernel, kmem-pools, buffers (that alone makes usually 5-10% of
"realmem"), ... need some RAM. On some architectures like alpha the
firmware/bios/bootrom/prom etc as well. I think "avail mem" is what is left
for user processes.

You lucky guy, I have only 8M:
total memory = 8076 KB
avail memory = 5680 KB

And that's with a heavily stripped down kernel (no ffs, no ipv6, no DDB, no wscons -
you get the picture...)
