Is the August kernel one which you got from the 1.4.1 installation
directory? If it is, it should work. You'll want to run the install from
either the netbootable kernel+install or the bootfs image. Both reside
under

  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.4.1/vax/installation/
