You seem to be a step ahead of me at this point, I'm still stuck with
my hp style massbus/smd drives that 1.4 doesn't seem to support
properly .. can't even get disklabel to successfully label them.

for what it's worth - the labels written by edlabel and disklabel appear
to be substantially different - must use disklabel for 1.4.
