I'd experienced simillar clock problems on my VAXstations and MicroVAX II.
However, they all went away when I set them up with timed support and set
up my Linux box as a timed server.  The machines boot and have their time
set without problems.

It's not a fix, but it's a great workaround that doesn't require you to
drop to single user mode to fix the date.
