That depends on how you look at it. Palmer has always been the
shareholders' man, that has been his mission. Think about it, the first
time you saw a photo of Palmer, who did he remind you of? Michael
Douglas' character in the movie "Wall Street", right?

That tells you a lot about his mission and his goals right there.

He managed to get $30 in cash and almost one Compaq share for each DEC
share for the shareholders. Not bad.

He first sold off everything of value (the Alpha, the Storage division,
the Network division etc.) to get the company back into the black and
then he sold the rest at exactly the right moment for as much as he
could get. Textbook stuff.

That the company was ruined in the process is immaterial from the
shareholders' point of view. Palmer saved their asses, didn't he?
