add the statement:

arp -s name.of.vax.box 08:00:etc:etc:etc:etc (what is read back to you
on the vax when you show dev)

if you don't have that rarpd won't work and blows the whole thing.  Also
remember you need bootparamd and /etc/bootparams

What OS are you doing this under (doesn't look like FreeBSD to me)?
