Sounds like a possible memory problem (bad chip or something). Try
reseating the cards (this ususally works). These things are built
like tanks but even old DEC machines will fail at some point... :)

Hi,

Could someone please give me a big hint ...

I have a mvII running an old VMS, which I was thinking about NetBSD for,
so I thought I better determine *exactly* what was in it...

So Today I took it to bits (side off/cards out...) I wrote everything down
(what was in what slot ..) and I put it back together (in what I noted
down as the same slots ..) And ... It didn't work!.

To be more precise it starts the boot sequence

    7..6..
    ?3
Unable to start normal operation (or similar)

Now I think I've put everything back correctly, and I have to admit that
its been a few years (7) since I really took a II to bits / put it back
together and I no longer have any mvII docs! (I was only given this m/c a
few months ago - and yes it did work before I took it to bits :( .

follows

    1,2,3 Processor / Memory
    4(top) DEQNA
4(bottom) Emulex QTA (scsi? - just has ribbon cable going nowhere)
    5(top) TK50 driver
    5(bottom) empty !
6(top) Emulex Serial driver connected to 8xDB25
6(bottom) Emulex Serial driver connected to 16xDB9
7(top) Emulex QD(?) Disk Driver connected to two discs
7(bottom) Emulex QD(?) Disk Driver connected to one disc (boot dev)

Unfortunately I don't know what mem / disc drives actually are because I
decided the quickest way was to get VMS to tell me!

Just Occasionally the boot up sequence gets as far as booting from the
disc, but then it kernal traps and reboots - but then it never gets
further than originally described.

My Questions are: -

1) Does anyone know *exactly* what the error means - Do I just need to
reseat the boards / crecheck the cables (again!)

2) Is it valid to half an empty half slot as I described - or did I just
note down the positions incorrectly.

3) Are the above Emulex cards supported (this may not be answerable until
I provide the full info - please indicate!)

Your help greatly appreciated, as I'm sure the old thing has plenty of
life left in it - I'm hoping to get another in the next few months!

Thanking in appreciation

usenet / email answers greatly appreciated - if email please cc: to my
work address if possible as that's where the mvII is currently residing -
lunchtime job ;^D
