Yes, this seems to be the problem indeed.

Andreas and I managed to get another disk into one of our Sun-3/260's
and were able to build a new kernel from the 1997/11/17(~17:00) sup
snapshot and it seems at least as stable as the 11/12 build you did.

However it still won't run Xsun from either the old X11R6 sun3 snapshot,
or from the X11R6.3 snapshot uploaded in August (though it will run
Xnest from the latter and other X11 apps such as xterm, xclock, oclock,
etc. from both, and even an old Mosaic beta).

The panic is basically the same as the one as with the 11/12 kernel.
Unforuntately this kernel was built without the debugger and thus
without debugging symbols too, so a backtrace is essentially useless:

17:23 [91] # gdb netbsd.5.kernel

(gdb) target kcore netbsd.5.core
panic: MMU fault
#0 0xe09cd6c in cpu_reboot ()
(gdb) bt
#0 0xe09cd6c in cpu_reboot ()
#1 0xe09cd6c in cpu_reboot ()
#2 0xe019c30 in panic ()
#3 0xe0a06c0 in trap ()
(gdb) ?

(Which reminds me -- I should send-pr a report that savecore is not
saving a copy of the system image....)

A 'strings' on the core reveals the following from _msgbufp:
